Kesennuma Port and Sharks

Kesennuma Port boasts the largest volume of shark landings in Japan, accounting for approximately 90% of all shark landings in Japan.

Kesennuma has long been home to a thriving shark-processing industry and is widely known as both a “shark town” and a “shark fin town”—a rarity in Japan. Processors, fishermen, local government, and partner companies work together in a community-wide effort. The culture of making full use of every part of the shark, with sustainability in mind, can be felt throughout each stage of production.

Sharks landed at Kesennuma Port are processed within the city and ultimately become the shark fin dishes served at Kesennuma KUROMORI.
